Cross-training is when the golf course staff is trained to perform various jobs by department heads to improve job performance while creating a diverse employee to grow your golf course and his/her golf career.
I am a firm believer in employee cross training for numerous reasons. I know those of you who have read my blogs in the past will know I do not believe staff members should try to wear too many hats because no one can be a jack of all trades but they will definitely become a master of none. You really need to focus your concentration on one given field but cross training doesn’t mean wearing multiple hats in departments requiring trained professionals.
Cross training helps not only the golf course but the golf course staff as well. What I mean by this is, when you train a member of your staff to learn other departments and other job descriptions, you are benefiting not only the golf course but you are also benefiting the golf club employee because he/she has now made himself/herself more valuable. Do not confuse this with cross training your employees to do jobs that require in-depth education or knowledge, e.g., bookkeeping, providing lessons, golf marketing. But you can cross-train your employees to do numerous other things throughout the golf course just in case they are needed to cover another position temporarily.
This training gives the employee job security; the more value they bring to the golf club, the more security they are going to have within the golf course
Cross-training employees also helps the golf club because if someone is absent or you lose an employee, whether they are fired or quit, you always have this versatile staff that can fill in until you can replace the missing staff member.
Cross-training is an excellent way to eliminate unnecessary expenses and minimize your payroll as well.
Cross-train your staff and you will grow your golf course, the game and your golf career.
