Golf Marketing Conscious Incompetence

The second stage in mastering a given skill is what they call “conscious incompetence” (you are now aware that you are unequipped to do the task), i.e., successfully market your golf course. This is where you start to realize that you have no education, skill set or any idea to even start your mastery of golf marketing. You will realize you do not have the proper tools to be successful in golf marketing and you will start to seek out more information to enhance your skills in golf marketing.

This is the point where you become aware of the fact that you really do not know what you are doing when it comes to golf marketing. This is a great revelation because as soon as you realize that you do not know what you are doing, you will start to grow.

Using the same analogy of driving a manual shift car, you become aware that you are now consciously incompetent when it comes to driving this vehicle. You will now start to process the functions of the accelerator, the clutch, the gear shift, etc., and how they work in relation to one another, e.g., letting off the accelerator, pushing in the clutch, shifting into first gear and as you start to accelerate you depress the clutch slowly and smoothly to avoid stalling the engine.

This is very similar to golf marketing where you have to learn the relation between the taglines, hook lines, sense of urgency, ad copy, ad design, etc. Just as in the analogy of the car, if your golf course marketing campaigns are not properly executed, your marketing campaigns will stall just as quick as the engine in a car. You will now move into the next stage which is “conscious competence” which I will be discussing in my next blog.

Be aware of the four stages in mastering a new skill set (golf marketing) and you will grow your golf course, the game and your golf career.
