Selling any product or service can be challenging if you are not well versed in several areas, e.g., your golf product and golf services, the golf property, the golf memberships or passes, the casual golfer, the core golfer, the golf industry, the psychology of sales, etc., etc., etc. I have always defined a “sale” as when two people meet and one transfers his/her enthusiasm about a product or service to the other. The only way this is ever going to happen on a consistent basis is if you truly love golf and the golf facility where you are employed.

People have enough negativity in their lives and they are looking for somewhere to go and enjoy life. Get in the habit of greeting everyone with a smile; whether you feel like it or not. People mirror images and if you smile at them, the chances are they will smile back. Always get started off on the right foot because as they say, and it is so true in sales, “you never get a second chance at a first impression”.

Knowledge, enthusiasm and a great smile are the foundation on which you will begin to lock-up this new relationship. There are numerous things you can learn about behavioral habits, spending patterns, psychology of selling, etc., but nothing will pay higher dividends than enthusiasm, knowledge of your golf product and service and a smile. Sometimes we forget that it is the simple things in life that produce some of the best results. So next time you greet a guest, just be yourself and don’t try to sell anything; just simply focus on transferring your enthusiasm about golf and your golf facility and a sale will take place.
